A year before his death, West Indian-born Emanuel de la Motta penned two prayer books, one for each of his daughters, Rachel and Clara. A commission merchant and auctioneer, de la Motta, like Abraham Alexander and Israel De Lieben, was a founder of Charleston’s Supreme Council of Scottish Rite Masonry, and he served as its first treasurer-general.
