Document Description

This photograph shows Frank Wilkinson just before speaking to students across the stone wall that divides McCorkle Place and Franklin Street. He is being introduced by Student Body President Paul Dickson. Wilkinson attempted to speak on campus, but was turned away by Chief of Campus Security, Arthur Beaumont. Instead he spoke across the wall. Seven days later, on 9 March 1966, the scene was repeated as Communist Herbert Aptheker attempted first to speak near the statue of "Silent Sam" on campus, but was turned away. He too moved to a spot across the wall and spoke to approximately 2,000 students.
