expand/collapse Expand/collapse Collection Overview

Size About 50,000 items (51.0 linear feet)
Abstract The Athens Boiler and Machine Works was formed from companies that started in Athens, Ga., around 1848. In 1972, the company moved to Elberton, Ga. It ceased operations in 1994. The collection includes correspondence, financial records, pictures, and other records of Athens Boiler and Machine Works in Athens, Ga. Correspondence chiefly concerns buying and selling goods, including such matters as giving or receiving price quotations or settling questions regarding invoices. In the 1930s, most correspondence is with other companies in Georgia and concerns selling shot wheels, emery rings, or buffers, or buying engines or felt. During World War II, much correspondence concerns selling boilers. There are also records relating to government agencies and requirements, including the Office of Price Administration, the Office of Defense Transportation, and the War Production Board. In 1944 and 1945, there are many letters to and from school systems about boilers for canning plants. There is also correspondence with several boiler, burner, and granite organizations, including the American Monument Association. There are also ledgers, financial statements, daily journals, inventories, price lists, purchase orders, and other financial records, including accounts receivable and accounts payable, 1935-1986. Other records are chiefly related to advertising and promotion of products. Scattered personnel records relate to employees, employment policies, pay, and benefits. There are also pictures of boilers, polishing wheels, machinery, and aerial photographs of an unidentified industrial area.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Historical Information

Athens Boiler and Machine Works (ABMW) of Elberton, Ga., evolved from companies in Athens, Ga. Athens Foundry, chartered in 1848 as an offshoot of the Athens Coal Gas company, began casting iron in 1851. The castings consisted of coal grates, andirons, municipal grates, construction elements, and houseware items for use in the local community.

Following the Civil War, the Athens Foundry continued casting a variety of items for local consumption while branching out into machine tooling to meet the needs of growing industry across the piedmont. Re-capitalization during the 1880s brought additional skills and machine tools to the foundry, which became known as the Athens Foundry and Machine Works. In 1928, the Arnold family sold the enterprise to Augustus Blount, a retired official of the Georgia Railroad.

During World War II, the Athens Foundry and Machine Works developed a lucrative business fabricating steel canning retorts (pressure vessels) used in processing military rations. Following the war, while continuing various lines of job production castings and one-off repair pieces for local industry, the Athens Boiler and Machine Works began selling, repairing, and installing heating and dry cleaning boilers throughout the Southeast.

Shortly after this, granite finishing concerns located in Elberton, Ga., approached Athens Boiler and Machine Works about producing cast iron polishing wheels to be used in granite processing. As boiler sales dropped off during the 1960s, urban renewal in Athens and the growing demand for granite polishing wheels prompted a move to Elberton, "Granite Capital of the World," in 1972. This vein of the business became the staple market for the ABMW until its close in 1994.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Series 1. Correspondence and Related Papers, 1934-1977.

About 30,000 items.

Arrangement: chronological, then alphabetical.

Correspondence and other papers of Athens Boiler and Machine Works. These papers are filed as received. Changes in company filing practices are reflected in the order of the files. From 1934 through 1941, incoming and outgoing correspondence was filed separately. Beginning in 1942, incoming and outgoing correspondence was filed together. Through 1947, annual files were maintained. Almost no files have survived for 1948 and 1949. Beginning in 1950, files cover several years, and these are not always consistent. For 1950-1953, correspondence relating to boilers and correspondence relating to granite work are in separate files. Within each year or span of years, files are alphabetical, with some separate files for companies with whom there is much correspondence.

These are filed under the names of states. This correspondence continues in 1946 and 1947.

Correspondence in the 1950s is similar in that it continues to address buying and selling goods, giving or receiving price quotations, or settling questions regarding invoices. After 1950, the organization of files is inconsistent, and some files appear to be missing. There are several separate files for companies or organizations with whom there is considerable correspondence. These include the American Monument Association, Barber Gas Burner Co., Bicknell Mnfg. Co., Bluefield Supply Co., Dixie Canning Co., and Hamburg Boiler Works.
