Abstract Hope Bain (born 1795) was a Universalist minister who lived in Baltimore, Md., and in various towns in eastern North Carolina, finally settling in Goldsboro, N.C. The collection includes correspondence, diaries, sermons, theological notes, and other papers of Bain and papers of his sons. Diaries, 1839-1868, with occasional gaps, contain brief daily records of weather and professional activities, with miscellaneous accounts and memoranda. Correspondence, 1827-1876, pertains to temperance activities in Baltimore and to Universalist matters in the South, and includes a series of letters from John C. Burness, a minister at Notasulga, Ala., in the 1850s. Papers of Bain's sons include a record book of the Goldsboro Rifles, 1877-1881, and a muster role for Company B, 1st North Carolina Regiment in the Spanish-American War.
