The Burns family counted among its members James W. Burns of Chambersburg, Pa.; his sister, "Sue;" Charles M. Burns of Philadelphia, Pa.; and John Beard and Louis H. Beard of Salisbury, N.C.

The collection includes photocopies of a journal, July 1849, 15 pages, of a trip via the steamship Osprey from Philadelphia, Pa., to Charleston, S.C., and then via rail and stage to Salisbury, N.C. The journal is written in letter form by "Sue" to her brother, James W. Burns, and describes arrangements and accommodations and fellow travelers. There are also two letters. One letter, 26 May 1849, from Aunt Sue to her nephews John and Louis H. Beard at Salisbury, mentions relatives; the other, undated, from Charles M. Burns of Philadelphia, to his cousin Maria in Hillsborough, N.C., mentions the above journal and a family portrait.
