Abstract Armistead Burwell (1839-1913) was a lawyer of Charlotte, N.C., state senator, and North Carolina supreme court judge. The collection includes the papers, chiefly 1869-1913, of Burwell, including correspondence from his Charlotte, N.C., law practice, speeches for ceremonial occasions, and papers relating to family events, Confederate veterans' activities, and the bar association. Also included are three scrapbooks of members of the Burwell family, with clippings about family and social events in Charlotte, 1894-1913, and a Good Roads Tour, New York to Atlanta, 1909; a military pass and an account book of Captain Burwell, 1864; and caricatures, drawings, and mimeographed student newspapers of a grandson, also named Armistead Burwell, 1935-1936.

Armistead Burwell (1839-1913) was a lawyer of Charlotte, N.C., state senator, and North Carolina supreme court judge. He was the son of Reverend Robert Burwell and Margaret Anna Robertson Burwell. He was educated at Davidson College and was teaching in Princeton, Ark., in 1861 when he joined the Confederate Army, serving with the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, and becoming captain on the staff of General F. C. Armstrong. He began the practice of law in Charlotte, N.C., 1869, in various partnerships with Calvin E. Grier, Zebulon B. Vance, Platt D. Walker, and E. T. Cansler. He was also director of the North Carolina Railroad. He married Ella Jenkins of Salisbury, N.C., a sister of Mrs. Eben Nye Hutchinson of Charlotte. They had three children, Armistead Burwell Junior, Birdie (Mrs. Richard C.) Carson, and Fannie (Mrs. Word H.) Wood.

Burwell, 1864; and caricatures, drawings, and mimeographed student newspapers of a grandson, also named Armistead Burwell, 1935-1936. There are also a few photographs including portraits of Burwell family members and the Burwell family home.
