The Chapel Hill Choral Club was founded in 1921 under the auspices of the Chapel Hill Community Club. In the early 1930s, the Community Club allowed the Music Department of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill to assume overall direction of the Choral Club. In practice, this meant that the musical director was from the Department, the president was from Chapel Hill, and the singers were from the University as well as surrounding communities. From 1949 to 1963, Professor Joel Carter (1913-2000) was the Club's musical director.

Records kept by Joel Carter, a professor in the Music Department at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., while he was the musical director of the Chapel Hill Choral Club, 1949-1963. For any given musical season the contents vary slightly, but in general, these papers are made up of rosters of singers, attendance records, practice schedules, local newspaper clippings, lists of new arrivals to the area, letters, and event programs. The letters tend to cluster around a number of discrete categories: form letters inviting new arrivals to consider singing with the Club, personal notes to Carter expressing regret at having to leave the Club, and business letters concerning the rental of sheet music.

In 1961, in preparation for the Club's 40th anniversary, a file of historical information and documents was gathered together to create a celebratory pamphlet. This file contains the Club's constitution and lists of past musicial performances, presidents, and directors.
