Abstract Edward J. Chilton was a student at the University of North Carolina who served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. He was born in Brownsville, Tenn., in October 1840. After working as a farmer, he entered the University of North Carolina in 1859, where he was a member of the Dialectic Society. He died at the Siege of Yorktown in 1862. The collection is an autograph album, probably created around 1861, that belonged to Edward J. Chilton. It contains about 70 entries with signatures of students who attended the University of North Carolina, chiefly 1859-1862. The first page has an entry for Chilton. Other pages contain signatures of his friends and classmates, usually with the signer's date and place of birth; his profession; class year; relationship to Chilton; membership in University societies (many were Dialectic Society member); and a saying or quotation in English, Latin, or French. Some entries include a woman's name, possibly the signer's wife or girlfriend. All of the signers were born 1840-1842 in southern states and most listed profession as farmer, lawyer, or soldier.
