Fort Defiance, Inc., of Lenoir, N.C., and its predecessor, the Fort Defiance Restoration Committee, were organized in the interest of restoring Fort Defiance, the home of Revolutionary general and planter-entrepreneur William Lenoir (1751-1839). Mildred McDowell Jones of Caldwell County, N.C., began lobbying for the restoration in 1964 and the project was completed in 1978. Other persons involved in the inception and administration of Fort Defiance, Inc. included Joe J. Steele, Earl Tate, Dennis Cook, Margaret Harper, Nancy Alexander, Anne Williams Gray, William S. Lamparter, G. Alex Bernhardt, David Flaherty, and Edwin S. Hartshorn.

The collection is chiefly correspondence, minutes, financial statements, legal documents, and other records of Fort Defiance, Inc., of Lenoir, N.C. The documents are concerned with the restoration of the home of William Lenoir in Caldwell County, N.C. There are also some research notes, essays, newspaper clippings, and ephemera related to the project.
