The zoology and physiology notebook of Gunter contains notes on lectures given at the University of North Carolina in 1878 and 1879. The lectures are accompanied by color drawings and diagrams. John Doctor Gunter, the son of John Ambrose Gunter and Elizabeth Brown Gunter, was born on 5 January 1853, in Moore County, N.C. He worked as a miller and ginner in Jonesboro, N.C., from 1881 through 1887, and in Sanford, N.C., from 1897 to 1900. He then worked for Cole Printing Company in Sanford from 1900 to 1920.
Gunter married Jennie Leah Denny (1857-1920) in Graham, N.C., on 9 March 1881, and the couple had ten children: Eugene Denny Gunter (1882-1962), Junius Utley Gunter (1884-1931), Herbert Brown Gunter (1886-1931), Charles Walker Gunter (1888-1946), Paul Patterson Gunter (1892-1893), Ruth Pauline Gunter (1893-1982), May Eliza Gunter (1896-1975), Bettie Clarine Gunter (1901), and Jennie Dee Gunter (1902-1939). John Doctor Gunter died on 24 September 1926 in Sanford.
