Abstract Samuel Gordon Heiskell (1858-1923) was a criminal lawyer, judge, mayor of Knoxville, Tenn., and author of Andrew Jackson and Early Tennessee History. The bulk of the collection concerns Heiskell's book, and includes about 175 photographs; an annotated copy of his manuscript; copies of historical manuscripts; correspondence concerning book sales and other matters; and picture plates. Also included is a scrapbook covering Heiskell's political and legal careers, his book, and Tenessee historical articles and activities.

Arrangement: Alphabetical, then by subject.

This series contains photographs primarily used in Heiskell's book. Almost all of them are mounted and retouched for printing purposes. Many are photographic prints of portraits and drawings of Andrew Jackson and his contemporaries, with the majority identifed. There are also 10 unnumbered photographs and postcards in PF-1397/20, including several family photographs, portraits, and images of Native Americans from the Bureau of American Ethnology.
