Abstract Isaac Fontaine Hite was from Middletown, Frederick County, Va. He attended the University of Virginia beginning in 1827 and later became a farmer. The collection is a notebook with Isaac Fontaine Hite's notes from lectures by University of Virginia chemstry professor John P. Emmet (1797-1842).

Isaac Fontaine Hite is listed in the University of Virginia's alumni directory as being from Middletown, Frederick County, Va. He was born in 1807 and attended the University beginning in 1827.

John Patten Emmit, son on Thomas Addis Emmet, was born in Ireland, educated in New York, received his M.D. from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, practised medicine in Charleston, S.C., and gave lectures on chemistry there before joining the faculty at the University of Virginia in 1824.

The collection is a notebook with Isaac Fontaine Hite's notes from lectures by University of Virginia chemstry professor John P. Emmet (1797-1842). The first section, finished in March 1828, is chiefly concerned with elements (pages 1-125); the second section contains notes on lectures on glass, soap, lime, digestion, and other topics (pages 1-152).

Cornelius B. Hite and Arthur W. Upshur, whose names have been added to the fly-leaves, attended the University of Virginia in 1836-1837. Cornelius B. Hite (1818-1842) was also from Middletown, Va. Upshur, from Northampton County, Va., was a doctor, purser in the United States Navy, and died at sea in 1845.
