Abstract Norman Ethre Jennett was a cartoonist for various publications including the Raleigh (N.C.) News and Observer, 1895-1898; the New York Herald, 1901-1917; and Flying and its successor, Aerial Age Weekly, 1917-1923. He was also the art editor for McFadden Publications, 1923-1939. The collection includes correspondence, drawings, scrapbooks and other materials by and about Norman E. Jennett. Included are letters from Josephus Daniels, Julian S. Carr, and others about North Carolina and national politics, especially the campaigns of 1898 and 1900, and letters from editors, publishers, and fellow artists about Jennett's work.

Norman Ethre Jennett (1877-1970), native of Wayne County, N.C., was a cartoonist and art editor for various publications. Jennett worked as a cartoonist for the Raleigh (N.C.) News and Observer, 1895-1898; the New York Herald, 1901-1917; and Flying and its successor, Aerial Age Weekly, 1917-1923; and as art editor for McFadden Publications, 1923-1939.

Jennett married Helen Mary MacGinness in 1901 and they and their two children lived in Cedar Grove, N.J., until the 1950s when Jennett moved to California.

The collection includes correspondence, drawings, scrapbooks and other materials by and about Norman Ethre Jennett. Included are letters from Josephus Daniels, Julian S. Carr, and others about North Carolina and national politics, especially the campaigns of 1898 and 1900, and letters from editors, publishers, and fellow artists about Jennett's work. Other notable correspondents include William Griffith, James Gordon Bennett Junior, Walter Hines Page, and William C. Spencer. The scrapbooks contain cartoons and illustrations and clippings about Jennett and his family. The collection also contains about 65 loose cartoons, trademarks designed by Jennett, articles with Jennett's illustrations, and scattered copies of Aerial Age Weekly, Flying, and other magazines in which his work appeared. Also included are the papers and correspondence related to Jennett of H. G. Jones, curator of the North Carolina Collection, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
