Kensey Johns (1759-1848) chief justice of the Supreme Court of Delaware and chancellor of the state, retired in 1832 to his home at New Castle, Del. He had three sons: Kensey Johns Jr. (1791-1857), a lawyer and chancellor of the state of Delaware; John Johns (1796-1876), a bishop of Virginia; and Henry Van Dyck Johns (1803-1859), pastor in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Baltimore, Md., and president of the Maryland Tract Society for the 15 years preceding his death.

The collection includes scattered and miscellaneous papers of Kensey Johns, including eight letters, 1839-1841, from his son, Henry Van Dyck Johns dealing with the death of his mother and general family news; legal papers; and "Statement of the Strength and Condition of the Fifth Regiment of the Delaware Militia," 1819. The collection also includes several military papers of Major Richard Johns of the 15th Maryland Militia, 1794-1797; a short religious essay by Henry Van Dyck Johns, 1843; and other items.
