Abstract Loren Carey MacKinney was a professor of medieval history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1930 until his death in 1963. MacKinney was born in Minnesota and received degrees from Lawrence College and the University of Chicago. He taught at eight colleges and universities before coming to UNC-Chapel Hill, and was regarded as an authority on the history of medieval medicine. His publications included Early Medieval Medicine, with Special Reference to France and Chartres (1937), The Medieval World (1938), and Medical Illustrations in Medieval Manuscripts (1965). The MacKinney Collection consists mostly of microfilm and photostats chiefly of medieval medical manuscripts, as well as MacKinney's extensive research notes on medieval medicine, medieval medical illustrations, and related topics.

Received from Mrs. Loren C. MacKinney of Chapel Hill, N.C., in December 1963 with an addition from Thomas C. Herndon in August 1991 (Acc. 91118).
Additional Descriptive Resources
A card file providing an index to the microfilm and photostats collected by MacKinney was completed by Michael McVaugh of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill History Department in 1965 and is filed in box 2.

Loren Carey MacKinney was a professor of medieval history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1930 until his death in 1963. MacKinney was born in Minnesota and received degrees from Lawrence College and the University of Chicago. He taught at eight colleges and universities before coming to UNC-Chapel Hill, and was regarded as an authority on the history of medieval medicine. His publications included Early Medieval Medicine, with Special Reference to France and Chartres (1937), The Medieval World (1938), and Medical Illustrations in Medieval Manuscripts (1965).

Processing Note: Microfilm and photostats were labeled by MacKinney according to the first letter of the location of the original manuscript and then given an arbitrary number (e.g.. C3 for Cambridge). A card file located in box 2 provides an index to the microfilm and photostats. Microfilm of published articles from scholarly journals is labeled with the letter X.

Microfilm, photostats, and photo prints chiefly of medieval manuscripts mostly related to MacKinney's research on medieval medicine and medical illustrations. Of particular note are photo prints of Chartres Ms. 62, filed as M2 (Montpelier), which were made prior to 1944 when the original manuscript was destroyed during World War II. MacKinney's photostat of the Chartres manuscript is one of only two known copies.
