Abstract	The Susan Massengale Collection contains videotapes and paper documentation from documentary film productions affiliated with Susan Massengale, who produced and directed documentaries on North Carolina subjects for the University of North Carolina Center for Public Television from 1980-1997. Film productions represented in the collection include Step It Up and Go: Blues in the Carolinas (1989), a documentary film that traces the development of blues music in the Carolinas; Boogie in Black and White (1988), a documentary film about the making of Pitch a Boogie Woogie, a film shot in Greenville, N.C. in 1947 with an all African American cast; an untitled production on Cherokee Indians and Joyce Dugan, who was elected Principal Chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in 1995; and an untitled production on Black Mountain College, an experimental arts college that was active in western North Carolina from 1933-1957.

Susan Massengale received a journalism degree from West Virginia University in 1975. She worked as a Producer and Director for North Carolina Center for Public Television (UNC-TV) from 1980-1997. Since 1999, she has been a Public Information Officer for the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The Susan Massengale Collection contains paper documentation, videotape production elements and select rough cuts from four documentary film productions, including Step It Up and Go: Blues in the Carolinas (1987-1989), Boogie in Black and White (1987-1988), an untitled production on the Cherokee Indians (1995), and an untitled production on Black Mountain College (1987-1989). Videotape formats include Betacam, U-Matic, and VHS.

Step It Up and Go: Blues in the Carolinas traces the development of blues music in the Carolinas through interviews with musicians and still photographs of them. North Carolina musicians talk about how they learned to play and perform different styles on the banjo, fiddle, guitar, piano, bottle, and spoons. Performers featured include Odell Thompson, Nate Thompson, Joe Thompson, Etta Baker, Cora Phillips, Junior Thomas, Thomas Burt, Guitar Slim, Moses Roscoe, and Anthony Pough. Susan Massengale co-produced and co-directed the film with folklorist and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor, Glen Hinson. Formats include U-Matic, Betacam, and VHS.

Boogie in Black and White is a film about the making of Pitch a Boogie Woogie, a film shot in Greenville, N.C., in 1947 by John W. Warner, then owner of Greenville's Plaza Theatre. Pitch a Boogie Woogie, released by Lord-Warner Pictures, Inc., in 1948, was the first movie made by a production company based in North Carolina. It had an all-African American cast of mostly local Greenville musicians and actors and enjoyed success in the Carolinas, but was never shown outside that area. Susan Massengale directed and co-produced Boogie in Black and White with author and founding editor of the North Carolina Literary Review, Alex Albright. Format is U-Matic.

The Cherokee Indian production appears to be mostly about Joyce Dugan, who was elected Principal Chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in 1995. She was the first woman to hold that position. Susan Massengale's role on the production is unclear. Format is Betacam.

The Black Mountain College production appears to be about the history of Black Mountain College in Black Mountain, N.C. Black Mountain College was founded in 1933 and guided by the principle that the study of art was central to a liberal arts education. Black Mountain College closed in 1957. Susan Massengale's role on the production is unclear. Format is Betacam.

Folkways is a series about the folk arts and crafts of the Southern Highland Mountains, produced in the early 1980s and hosted by David Holt. Shot on location in the Appalachian Mountains, the show documented activities such as homesteading, blacksmithing, dyeing, wooling, and weaving.
