Abstract | Jill McCorkle is an author of novels and short stories. A native of Lumberton, N.C., she studied creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Hollins College. Her first two novels, The Cheerleader and July 7th, were published simultaneously by Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill in 1984. Other published works of fiction include her novels Tending to Virginia (1987), Ferris Beach (1990), and Carolina Moon (1996) and several collections of short stories, including Crash Diet (1991), Final Vinyl Days (1998), Creatures of Habit (2001), and Going Away Shoes (2009). The collection includes notes and draft material for both published and unpublished novels, short stories, and essays by Jill McCorkle; typescripts with copy-editing and technical notes and proofs for her published works, including notes from her editor, Shannon Ravenel; several items relating to her life and work, including a biographical essay and a book review; and drafts of fiction by other writers, including Madison Smartt Bell. Additions received after 2006 have not been integrated into the original deposits. Researchers should always check additions to be sure they have identified all files of interest to them.

Early draft material, manuscripts, and proofs. Early draft materials consists of early versions of Tending to Virginia, including "It Will Always Be This Way," "The Pearson Girls," and "Emily's House," all draft manuscripts with editorial revisions. There are also successive revised draft manuscripts of Tending to Virginia close to its final form, and excerpts of sections, some with revisions. Other manuscripts include the author's review copy and the original copyedited manuscript. Proofs include the first revised page proof, the reading copy with second revisions, the author's review copy, and the final galley proof.

Drafts consist of successive versions of short stories considered for inclusion in Crash Diet, some of which were not selected. There are also a draft manuscript for "Carnival Lights," the original version of Crash Diet, and a production manuscript for Crash Diet in its final form. Proofs include a galley with author's corrections, a page proof master set, second galleys with revisions, and a final galley proof.

Major correspondents include Shannon Ravenel and Louis Rubin at Algonquin Books, literary agent Liz Darhansoff, and other writers such as Lee Smith and Madison Smart Bell. Also included are contracts and royalty reports from Algonquin Books and from other publishers and literary agencies, circa 1982-1986. There are some interviews with McCorkle and reviews of her published works, as well as other promotional materials for McCorkle and for Algonquin Books. There are works by other writers, including play adaptations of The Cheerleader and "Crash Diet." Also included are loose notes and notebooks, circa 1989-1994, and a small number of other papers.
