Abstract | Sallie Douglas McDowall (fl. 1860-1864) and Susan Witherspoon McDowall (fl. 1830-1859) were schoolgirls in Camden, S.C. The collection is two notebooks kept by the McDowall girls in Camden, S.C. One chiefly contains essays on topics in European history by Susan Witherspoon McDowall, possibly 1857. The other, kept at least chiefly by Sallie Douglas McDowall, contains original essays on contemporary topics, including secession and the impending war, poems, and other writings; it appears to date largely from 1860, but a few later dates are also present. |
