December 1947 Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, son of C.A. "Pete" and Margaret McKnight.

1966 Graduated from Garinger High School, Charlotte, North Carolina.

1970 Received B.A. from Duke University.

1970-1972 Worked as a local government and education reporter for the Durham Morning Herald.

1972-1975 Worked as a copy editor and reporter for the Raleigh News and Observer.

1975-January 1977 Worked as an editorial writer for the Fayetteville Observer.

13 January 1977 Announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate.

2 April 1977 Left Manteo, Dare County, N.C. on walking tour of the state to raise support for his candidacy.

22 October 1977 Ended walking tour of North Carolina in Murphy, Cherokee County.

2 May 1978 Received about 10,000 votes in Democratic senate primary, finishing fifth.

3-20 May 1978 Worked as field coordinator for primary run-off campaign of Luther Hodges,Jr.

News releases from the McKnight campaign to various North Carolina newspapers, documenting McKnight's arrival in North Carolina towns and his positions on issues such as campaign spending, natural gas regulation, and the Panama Canal treaties. Also included is a news release from the campaign of Luther Hodges, Jr., announcing McKnight's support for Hodges in the run-off.

Campaign photographs, chiefly taken during McKnight's walk from Manteo to Murphy. There are a number of photographs of McKnight walking along North Carolina roads, as well as photographs of him meeting voters. The photographs are arranged first by type (black and white print, color print, and black and white contact print), then, as far as can be determined, chronologically.
