Abstract William H. Morgan (1818-1901) was a physician and dentist in Nashville, Tenn., executive in mining and insurance companies, and founder and dean of the School of Dentistry at Vanderbilt University. The collection includes correspondence and other papers, mostly concerned with the dental profession in the South: professional training, organization, appointments, and supplies. These include letters from other dentists, prospective dental students, and patients. Other important topics of correspondence are Morgan's dental practice in partnership with T. B. Hamlin in the 1840s and 1850s, and the Vanderbilt dental school in the 1880s and 1890s. Also included are papers from the 1870s and 1880s relating to the Silver Mining Company in Tennessee, the Santa Gertrudio Mining Company in Mexico, and the Nashville Life Insurance Company; and personal correspondence relating to crops in Tennessee and Kentucky, banking, politics, war, and current events.
