The collection consists of 19 manuscripts reviewed by the author Elizabeth Spencer, a judge for the National Book Awards. The collection represents only award candidates reviewed by Spencer in manuscript form and does not include all works considered. Many of the manuscripts are accompanied by a cover letter from the publisher promoting the book.

All of the manuscripts are from the 1996 competition.
