Abstract Jerrold Orne (1911- ), library director, Library Science professor, and consultant on library concerns, with a national and international reputation as an expert on academic library buildings, library standards, and bibliographic control. Correspondence, reports, photographs, clippings, and other items relating to Orne's career in librarianship. Included are materials from his tenure at the Library of Congress, where, from 1940 to around 1944, he surveyed the collections and coordinated the defense effort for protecting materials in case of attack; his 1945 service as assistant librarian in the office of Alger Hiss during the United Nations Conference on International Organization; and his work in making available technical and scientific information generated by government-sponsored war research, 1946-1947. Also documented are his library directorships at Washington University, St. Louis, 1946-1952; Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., 1952-1956; and the University of North Carolina, 1957-1973. There is also material on Orne's employment as consultant on library topics, including his work, 1950-1959, with Cuban libraries, and his U.S. State Department-sponsored visit in 1965 to survey the conditions of libraries in Vietnam.

Folder 1

Library of Congress, 1940-1949. Materials relating to Orne's appointment as fellow in Library Science and Romance Languages. While at the Library of Congress, Orne surveyed the collections, reported on the condition of the Italian and French collections, organized the collection of library science literature, and coordinated the defense effort for protecting materials in case of attack. About 25 items.

Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., 1941-1942; 1958. Materials relating to Orne's position as librarian and associate professor of modern languages. Included are photographs of the library, an annual report, and a report entitled, "The Place of the Library in the Teaching Program." The 1958 item is a letter from a history professor at Knox about the changes that had taken place at the college since Orne's departure. About 15 items.

United Nations, San Francisco, 1945. Materials relating to Orne's work in the office of Alger Hiss in connection with the United Nations Conference on International Organization. Orne served as assistant librarian of the Secretariat. The conference was charged with writing the United Nations charter; one of the items is a cartoon captioned "From Debate to Document thru the International Secretariat," which depicts the process by which the charter was written. About 15 items.

Office of Research and Inventions, United States Navy, 1945-1946. Materials relating to Orne's work on subject headings and other bibliographic tools for use in naval research libraries. 6 items.

Folder 5

Publication Board, Dept. of Commerce, 1946-1947. Materials relating to Orne's position as chief of the Library Division of the Office of the Publication Board, United States Department of Commerce. The Office of Publication was established in 1945 to collect and make available technical and scientific information generated by government-sponsored war research. Included is notification of the development of a new list of scientific and technical subject headings. About 25 items.

Washington University, St. Louis, 1946-1952. Materials relating to Orne's position as director of libraries at Washington University. Included are letters about his employment, printed materials about the library system, and annual reports issued during his tenure. About 25 items.

Including are pictures and reports, including "Military Literature from the Librarians' Point of View." Included are letters to and from State Department personnel and Vietnamese librarians and reports, notes, and pictures relating to the libraries Orne visited in Saigon, Hue, and other locations.
