Abstract The Barry Poss Collection consists of 25 recordings, 1976-1979, created and compiled by Sugarhill Records founder, Barry Poss. The majority of the items are recordings, 1976-1977, of Virgil Craven (1902-1980), an Anglo-American old-time string band musician of Cedar Falls, N.C. The collection also includes two live recordings from 1975 of Gaither Carlton (1901-1972), an Anglo-American old-time fiddler, banjo player and singer from Deep Gap, Watauga County, N.C., and Arthel "Doc" Watson (1923-2012), an Anglo-American guitarist, banjo player and singer also from Deep Gap, Watauga County, N.C.

Barry Poss is former President and Chairman of Sugar Hill Records, a company he founded in 1978. Mr. Poss holds an Honours BA in sociology and psychology from York University, Toronto, Canada, receiving the Masters Award for Academic Achievement, and an MA and ABD from Duke University, Durham, NC, where he was a James B. Duke Fellow in the graduate school. Poss received an Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.

The Barry Poss Collection consists of 25 recordings, 1976-1979, on quarter inch open reel audio tape. The majority of the items are recordings, 1976-1977, of Virgil Craven (1902-1980), an Anglo-American old-time string band musician of Cedar Falls, N.C. The collection also includes two live recordings from 1975 of Gaither Carlton (1901-1972), Anglo-American old-time fiddler, banjo player and singer, and Arthel "Doc" Watson (1923-2012), Anglo-American guitarist, banjo player and singer, both from Deep Gap, Watauga County, N.C. On these recordings Carlton performs old-time tunes, old-time songs, and ballads on the fiddle or banjo and voice, while Watson performs two old-time songs on banjo and voice. Carlton is accompanied on some selections by Barry Poss on banjo and Sharon Poss on guitar.
