Abstract Marian H. Smith participated in a study tour to California conducted by the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., in 1930. The collection consists of one unbound typewritten travel diary, entitled "So We Go West", written by Marian H. Smith in 1930. The diary documents her participation in the Transcontinental Study Tour to California, conducted by the University of North Carolina. Smith joined the bus tour in Black Mountain, N.C., along with her friends Bronte Jumper, Dorothy Phillips, and Lucia Phillips. The diary includes short vivid descriptions of places where the bus tour stopped, as well as of the activities undertaken by the tour group. The diary includes poems and songs written by tour members about the places they visited and the people on the tour. Cities visited include Los Angeles, Calif., Oakland, Calif., San Francisco, Calif., Denver, Colo., Nashville, Tenn., Salt Lake City, Utah, and Reno, Nev. Parks described include Yosemite National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Petrified Forest National Park, and various tourist camps.
