Henry Owl, MA diploma, 1929

Henry Owl (1896-1980) is believed to be the first American Indian graduate of UNC and namesake of the Henry Owl Building. Owl (1896-1980) was a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). He graduated with his master’s degree in history in 1929 and would go on to become a face of the fight for Cherokee civil rights.
