2014 VISITING SCHOLARS GRANT PROGRAM

The Southern Historical Collection (SHC) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is accepting applications for five visiting scholar awards in fall 2014:

Joel Williamson Visiting Scholar Grant ($1200 award)
For projects examining African Americans or race relations in the American South

Guion Griffis Johnson Visiting Scholar Grant ($1000 award)
For projects examining women in the American South

John Eugene and Barbara Hilton Cay Visiting Scholar Grant ($1000 award)
For projects examining the literary culture or traditions of the American South

J. Carlyle Sitterson Visiting Scholar Grant ($1000 award)
For projects examining the antebellum period in the American South

Parker-Dooley Visiting Scholar Grant ($1000 award)
For projects examining North Carolina's history

ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars who plan to use the resources available in the Southern Historical Collection are eligible.

Foreign nationals must independently obtain a social security number and a visa before grant funds can be issued to them.

Each award recipient must make at least one in-person research visit to the SHC between 1 September 2014 and 1 July 2015.

Following the research visit, each award recipient will submit a brief publishable statement (300-600 words) describing the research visit and summarizing the results of research in the SHC's collections. This statement will be published in the Library's print and online publications and must be submitted to the SHC no later than July 31, 2015.

APPLICATION:

To apply, submit:

  • Curriculum vitae (maximum two pages, 11-point font, and one-inch margins)
  • Brief prospectus (maximum 500 words) indicating the award your project best fits and describing the project and the relevance of specific SHC collections to that project
  • Signed statement from either an advisor or a colleague in support of the proposed work in the SHC for this project.

All applications must be postmarked or time stamped no later than 31 March 2014. Awards will be announced in June 2014 and sent in August 2014.
