expand/collapse Expand/collapse Collection Overview

Size 58.5 feet of linear shelf space (approximately 46800 items)
Abstract Before 1934, the University of North Carolina campus at Chapel Hill was administered by a president. From 1934 to 1945 the dean of administration was the chief administrative officer; in 1945 the title of the position changed to chancellor. Robert Burton House (1892- ) served as executive secretary to President Frank Porter Graham from 1926 and became dean of administration in 1934. Records include correspondence and other files relating to the administration of and academic programs at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Among these records are a few files dating from House's tenure as executive secretary, as well as some earlier items that were among these files. Because of the close relationship of Frank Porter Graham to the Chapel Hill campus, both before and after he became president of the Consolidated University of North Carolina in 1932, much of the material one might expect to find in the chancellor's records is actually in the president's records. Topics of particular importance addressed in these records include desegregation of the university; World War II and national defense (including numerous letters from former students serving in the military); and expansion of the School of Medicine and establishment of the university medical center.

Prior to the creation of the Consolidated University of North Carolina system, the Chapel Hill campus was administered by a president. From 1934 until 1945 its chief administrative officer was the dean of administration. In 1945 the office of chancellor was established. Robert B. House served as executive secretary to President Frank Porter Graham from 1926 and was appointed dean of administration in 1934 and chancellor in 1945.

Records include correspondence and other files relating to the administration of and academic programs at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Among these records are a few files dating from R. B. House's tenure as executive secretary, as well as some earlier items that were among these files. Because of the close relationship of Frank Porter Graham to the campus, before and after his selection as Consolidated University of North Carolina president, much of the material one might expect to find in the chancellor's files is in the Consolidated University president's records. Indeed, the files of Chancellor House are not extensive until the 1940s, when Frank Porter Graham's wartime service in Washington began. Topics of particular importance addressed in these records include desegregation of the university; World War II and national defense (including numerous letters from former students serving in the military); and expansion of the School of Medicine and establishment of the university medical center.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Series 2. Academic Affairs, 1923-1957.

About 15600 items.

Included in this series are files on the departments, schools, institutes, centers, programs, curricula, and other units that made up the Division of Academic Affairs at the close of Chancellor House's administration. The division was created in 1954 on recommendation of a management study conducted by the firm of Cresap, McCormick and Paget (see file in Series 1); and it brought together all academic programs, with the exception of those in the Division of Health Affairs. The chief administrator of the Division of Academic was initially called dean of the faculty and later provost.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Addition of May 2016: Pre-flight School Test Scores, undated (RT 20160511.1).

2 items.

In February 1942, the United States Navy announced the establishment of a pre-flight school to train naval pilots on the campus of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. The University hosted the second stage of a-one year training program for the servicemen. Cadets began arriving in May 1942 at the rate of about 300 every two weeks until a quota of 1,875 was reached. The program graduated its first class in October of that year.

This addition consists of two undated sheets of what appear to be test scores for Batallion FU-5 from the Navy Pre-Flight School at UNC Chapel Hill, which existed from 1942 to 1945. These items came to University Archives in a transfer of records from the School of Law, but appear to be unrelated to the School of Law.
