Size 7.5 feet of linear shelf space (approximately 6000 items)
Abstract The position of dean of students at the University of North Carolina was established in 1919 and was assigned responsibility for matters related to student welfare. In 1933, the Division of Student Welfare (later the Division of Student Affairs) was established with the dean as its head. The dean continued to be head of the division until 1977, when the position of vice chancellor for student affairs was established. Subsequently, the Office of the Dean of Students was redefined; it reported to the vice chancellor and was chiefly responsible for matters of student conduct and for assistance to students with problems or concerns. As of 2011, the Office of the Dean of Students continued to educate the university community about policies and regulations related to student life and student conduct. The office served as a point of reference for students with concerns about their campus experience and provided services and programs to assist students in dealing with problems. Records include annual reports, 1960-1975, and several self-studies of the Division of Student Affairs; summaries of student disciplinary actions, 1951-1968; divisional memoranda; policies and regulations governing student conduct; and subject files related to various aspects of student life.
