Abstract	The collection of white photographer, poet, and painter Ignatius "Nace" Watsworth Brock (1866-1966) of New Bern and Asheville, N.C., contains glass plate negatives and positives and black-and-white photographic prints from circa 1889 to 1934. These images depict the towns of New Bern and Asheville and the surrounding areas and individuals including African Americans, members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Nace Brock, members of his family, photographer Bayard Wootten, S. Westray Battle, Cornelia S. Vanderbilt, and Edith D. Vanderbilt. Related materials include correspondence between Brock and Bayard Wootten, poetry written by Brock, and printed items. Like many photographers, Brock devised a classification system to manage the thousands of images he made, and often created titles to accompany photographic prints made for sale or display. Some of these classifications or titles contain offensive and racist language.

Acquisitions Information: Donors include Ora Brock Burgin (Brock's daughter) of Weaverville, N.C., who contributed materials on 26 March 1991 (accession no. 30453), 13 September 1991 (accession no. 30475), and December 1992 (accession no. 30559); Juanita Brown (a former employee in Brock's studio) of Asheville, N.C., who contributed materials on 13 September 1991 (accession no. 30474); and Celia and Joseph Eudy of Kinston, N.C., who contributed materials in 1995 (accession no. 30824) and in 1996 (accession no. 30825).

Ignatius Watsworth (sometimes spelled Wadsworth) Brock, known as Nace, was born in Jones County, N.C., in 1866. After studying art at Cooper Union in New York City, N.Y., he studied photography as an apprentice in New Bern, N.C., in the studio of Edward Gerock. He met Bayard Wootten around 1893 while they were both working at the Gerock studio and acted as her mentor during the beginning of her career. In 1897 Brock moved to Asheville, where he ran Brock's Photo Art Studio for more than forty years. Throughout his career, Brock won numerous awards for his photographic work, and also created paintings and wrote poetry. He married Ora Koonce in 1897, and continued to live and work in Asheville until his death in 1950.

The collection consists of about 430 images made by Nace Brock from circa 1889 to 1934. Images depict local individuals and various scenes from in and around New Bern and Asheville, N.C. Individuals include Nace Brock, members of the Brock family, Bayard Wootten, S. Westray Battle,and Cornelia S. and Edith D. Vanderbilt. Related materials include correspondence between Brock and Bayard Wootten, poetry written by Brock, and printed materials.
