expand/collapse Expand/collapse Historical Information

Roanoke Island in Dare County, N.C., was first settled by English colonists in 1587. The colony was led by John White and was the location of the first birth of an English child in America, Virginia Dare. In late 1587, John White returned to England for supplies and did not return for three years. Upon his return, it was discovered that the colony had been abandoned and no trace of the colonists remained, giving rise to the name "the Lost Colony."

Between 1984 and 1987, celebrations were held in Roanoke, N.C., to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the English settlement of America.
