The North Carolina Mountain Club of Asheville was founded in 1923. The club grew out of an earlier group called the "Appalachian Mountain Club of Boston" founded in Asheville, N.C. in 1920. The club was founded by men and women interested in outdoor activities (mainly camping, hiking, and creation of trails) and protecting/preserving the vast natural areas in the western part of North Carolina. The club organized year-round hiking and camping activities at a variety of locations in western North Carolina. The activities ranged from short day hikes to multi-day camping and hiking trips. The club maintained a series of trails, campsites, and cabins exclusively for use by members. The club was closely involved with the development and mapping of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail. As of September 2015, the club remains active and is still headquartered in Asheville, N.C. For more detailed information about the club, see the Carolina Mountain Club website: History.
