This Day in the History of the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

June 13, 1922
The University’s Board of Trustees received a report recommending the establishment of a four-year medical school, with an adequately supported teaching hospital. At the meeting, Colonel J. Bryan Grimes "moved that the board request the legislature to build the proposed hospital at Chapel Hill in connection with the medical school expansion as a memorial to the young men of North Carolina who lost their lives in the World War [I]. It was seconded by Mr. Josephus Daniels and unanimously carried."
