Dr. Martin Rodbell, adjunct professor of biochemistry, was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine for his part in the discovery of G-proteins and their role in turning signals from light, hormones, and some chemicals into action within cells.
October 11, 1994
Former men's basketball coach Frank McGuire died at his home in Columbia, South Carolina. McGuire led the Tar Heels to the 1957 NCAA basketball championship against Wilt Chamberlain and the University of Kansas. In addition, he hired Dean E. Smith as an assistant coach.

The women's soccer team lost its first home game ever, falling to Duke University by a score of 3-2.
