Former University baseball coach Walter Rabb died. Coaching the Tar Heels from 1947 to 1977, Rabb led the team to four ACC conference titles, four NCAA tournament appearances, two NCAA district titles, and two trips to the College World Series.

The Old Medical Sciences Research Building, completed in 1962, was named in honor of Dr. Stuart Bondurant, a former dean of the medical school. After closing in 2003 for a more than $17 million renovation, the facility reopened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on this day.
