November 5, 1820
William Richardson Davie died at his plantation, Tivoli, near Lancaster, South Carolina. Davie was instrumental in pushing the North Carolina legislature to charter a university, and he worked tirelessly to ensure the institution's early survival, earning him the title "Father of the University."
