University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill


April 18, 1853
William Rufus Devane King died in Dallas County, Alabama. He attended the University from 1801 to 1804, but left prior to graduating to study law. After a life-long career in public service, he was elected as vice-president of the United States in 1852. By a special act of Congress, he took the oath of office in Havana, Cuba, where he was recuperating from a bout with tuberculosis. He returned to Alabama but died on this day.
