June 27, 1857
Elisha Mitchell fell to his death from a forty-foot waterfall on what would come to be called Mt. Mitchell. The sixty-four-year-old professor of chemistry, mineralogy, and geology climbed the mountain to prove his (correct) assertion that it was the highest point east of the Mississippi River.
