Prior to an $18 million, three-year renovation of Memorial Hall, the University held a ceremonial closing of the campus landmark.

The University’s baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Duke University’s team. With the wins and resulting points, the Tar Heels won their first Carlyle Cup competition.

The newly renovated and expanded Frank Porter Graham Student Union opened. The University celebrated the event with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and remarks by Chancellor James Moeser, Union director Don Luse, and Union president Charles Phaneuf.

University supporter, benefactor, and historian Gladys Hall Coates died.

Senator Paul Wellstone (Democrat, Minnesota) was killed in a plane crash along with his wife, daughter, three political aides, and the plane's pilots. Wellstone received an A.B. in 1965 and Ph.D. in 1969 from the University.
