Tobacco Bag Stringing
Jettie Brooks

MISS JETTIE BROOKS lives with her mother, sister, and brother and is 34 years of age. Resides at Hunting Creek, N.C.

INCOME: Her mother gets $20 a month insurance for her son who was killed. They have no other income, but her mother has quite a bit of money in the bank.

EXPENSES: Their grocery bill is $5 a week, and their taxes are $17 a year. They rent out some of their land but the income from this is very small.

HOME CONDITIONS: The house has 7 rooms and there are 95 acres of land. Her mother owns 2 farms, which she rents out and this allows them to live better than others in this section. Although they can raise a little on their land, the house is in very good condition. They have a few chickens and 2 pigs.

STRINGING: Although she doesn't have to string bags, she has been doing this work for 5 years and makes $11 a week. She is unable to do any other kind of work because of a recent operation which left her very weak. Although this work hurts her eyes, she likes to do it to use up her spare time.
