Tobacco Bag Stringing
Pattie Wilson

MRS. PATTIE WILSON (colored) has five children. She is 48 years old and her husband is 60. Live in Reidsville, N.C.

INCOME: They have no income except money made by stringing bags, but they do raise most of their needs on the farm, and 8 or 9 acres of tobacco. Their taxes are about $45 a year. They only have to buy food occasionally. They are trying to buy the place and they spend all their extra money to meet the payments.

HOME CONDITIONS: House has 4 rooms and there are 100 acres of land. They own 2 mules, a cow, a pig and a few chickens. They own their own wood. The house needs a new roof but is in good condition otherwise. She has been stringing for 23 years and makes between $11.00 and $18.00 a month, depending on how much work she has to do on the farm. This money is badly needed and she likes to do this work.
