Resources Related to the Paper Currency & Banknotes in the André Savine Collection
This site provides information on the resources used in researching more than 600 numismatic pieces that are part of the André Savine Collection. During cataloging and during the creation of the Paper Currency & Banknotes database, research on Russian numismatics was conducted using print and Internet resources.
Classification of categories of Russian and Ukrainian currency listed in the Paper Currency & Banknotes database is based on those used in Polnyi katalog bumazhnykh denznakov i bon Rossii, SSSR, stran SNG (1769-2000), by P.F. Riabchenko and V.I. Butko (Kiev:Logos, 1999-). This resource provides detailed information on each category of currency according to its classification based on geographic origin or on historical periods of the Russian government. For a complete list of the categories and various types of Russian and Ukrainian currency in the Paper Currency & Banknotes database, please refer to either the Glossary of Terms: Categories of Currency or to the Glossary of Terms: Money Types.
In determining the signatures that appear on each bill, such as the names of the 'Upravliaiushii'(Manager) and 'Kassir'(Cashier), two documents (JPG images) were referenced after extensive research for online resources was conducted. Although poor in image quality, these documents provide the names and signatures of the 'Upravliaiushii' and 'Kassir' that appear on each 'Kreditnyi bilet'(Banknote) from 1898-1912, 1915, and 1918, as well as those on the 'Raschetnyi znak'(Currency) from 1919 with the exception of the 5,000 ruble and 10,000 ruble denominations. In cases where certain signatures were indecipherable, [undetermined] appears next to the respective title in the 'Signers of Note' field.
