Subject Headings Used in North Carolina Maps
There are several controlled-vocabulary subject headings used in the North Carolina Maps project. The links below will lead to thorough descriptions of each, as well as a browsable list of terms currently used in each field.
The Details field, inspired by subject terms used to catalog maps at the North Carolina State Archives, describes levels of detail shown on the map. This is a controlled-vocabulary field using local terms. These are not geographic terms, but general subjects that may appear on many different kinds of maps (for example, roads, railroads, schools, and soundings). The terms in this field will allow users to narrow their searches to locate specific types of maps.
The Places Depicted field uses local terms, relying primarily on the North Carolina Gazetteer, presented in LC format.
